Ever wonder why the Super Mario 2 videogame on the original NES had a arabian theme. They decided to not release it in the US(not it is now available as a download for the Wii.)They actually took a game called Doki doki panic in japan, and re-skined it with the Mario crew, when the Super Mario 2 japanese version tanked... Here are some of the art for it...and a shot of Doki-doki in the actual game. To this day this videogame has my favorite designed characters: The Shy Guys... they are really well designed!

We are off to Michigan this weekend to table at the "Kids Read Comics" Fare. I will be selling my Mini-comic "Ditto" and drawing sketchcards all day Saturday June 18th and Sunday June 19th.

...a little burn out adds to an older project

So I was trying to work on my 30characters and I got a sick. But I was looking through some older projects and ran across my "Space Marines" story that I was working on for an anthology. and I remembered a quick sketch of two comedic characters... A pair of brothers that kinda look like huge mice.

All I had was that they would launch the Space Marines away ships in the beginning of the story with a AC-DC style "Fiiiiiiiiiire." And suddenly it was Veteran's Day and a story came to me that I had to finish. #30characters be damned... Ha. So here is my #11 characters and a comic to accompany the characters.

My August's Art and Story: Challenge was inspired by Kevin Cross's poignant A&S:Supreme microcast "Fear." Please check it out if you haven't already. Also told here on his Monsters are go! page on his LazerBeams site...The story told of Kevin's father and his comic "Monsters are go! His words about his father moved me and inspired me to continue even harder on my artwork.

Here is my try at drawing his two Mod Monster and a making fun of Elmo joke.

I had originally had a "Draw a Kevin Cross type Monster" challenge scheduled, so this makes the challenge even more important. So this month our challenge is for Kevin, to try to inspire him right back.

I started up a new challenge at the Art and Story Forum ...if anyone is interested... you should check out their show and sign up for the forum... it's really informative... and lots of beginner and professional artists are on there talking on lots of different subjects.

This was the first assignment...it was "Use a catchphrase of Art and Story and illustrate it." The name of each of their podcast start with "THE BIG"...something. So I aped that...
The second assignments was to create a mash-up of two people or characters, give some of their character traits you considered and the drawing of said character... so here is a mash-up of Adam Strange and my niece Ashley.

I was digging through some old disks and found some scanned pictures of Sebastion from my webcomic "Beyond". I think I was working out some scenes that should be coming up soon...
This was the first drawings of Sebastion before I even thought of any story... I remember liking the mask and they huge eyes...

This is my last sketchbooks first page warm-up. I usally start with drawing cute girls... But as you are they were coming out a little frumpy. So I decided to attempt to draw every comic book character I have ever created. (From right of the address.) From Claf and Steve: Sydney, Claf, Nira, Steve. From Darksmith: Adze, D'ksmith, Bolt2, Gaile. From a unamed group of heroes from 4th grade: Cheetah, Shaslisa, Falcon, Spain, the cybertwins(the UFO thing) and Hunter. Then the Electric Monk. From Hybrid PD: Bolt1,Britanna, Distorter, Knightsmen, and the dog, Sassafras. Then from Beyond: the Old Man, Sebastion Scott, Webster, and Neil the hogelf. And finally from Jupiter City: Isaac Greenburg, Dr. Stone, Joh Sciatica, Jessie Combs, and Saul Sciatica. Sorry just seeing if I could remember them all!

I sat down and listed all the creatures of the night that I could think of associated with halloween. Like Werewolves, Witches, Frankenstine and used them as skins for my Happy Halloween poster. My expectations are to color each of these letters in time for All Hallow's eve.

I'm enjoying my Sunday to Thursday schedule. It's still going to take some time to get used to. But I am trying to take the time to actually work on long time projects that I have in the works.

Here is some ideas for a band, JohnnyHyperDrive, I was working with at the time. I still love the Easter Island heads and the Hula girl imagery. I only produced one poster for them they wanted more violent gun toting imagery.

Claf's Girl

I finished a drawings of Claf's love interest in "Claf and Steve." She is a lady in waiting and could not be even seen with a rogue. But they have a unrequited love for each other from afar....and an occasional stolen kiss (Claf is a thief.)

I'm Back!

I had a nice little vacation . I got a hand full of stories drawn and some written. The one that I had a deadline for was Crash! Boom! Bang! I turned it in Friday. and decided to finish up my first version of my submission, which was a completely different idea. So I decided to post this old version up for all to see.

This was a challenge for publication of a story called Crash! Boom! Bang! where they supplied the script of sound works and you had to make a comic from the words. I decided to turn in a actual story involving the mud monster in panel 5 instead of separating the sounds.

Claf and Steve Panel

Just getting reacquainted with my old characters. Claf and Steve have an old familiarity to them that makes them easy to draw and a newness that I need to write fresh stories. Here’s a panel with no background, with Steve peeking around the panel border, it shows the “tongue in cheek/fourth wall break” quality to the script I was going for when I created them. And we see Duke Snookie the one eyed nobleman of the Farlands hasn't aged a second.

Camping was fun this weekend, not too hot. We learned my puppy can swim like a fish. I'm exausted and back to work, hopefully not nodding off

Sushi Monday...

I took a vacation day last Friday, and will take one next Friday. Sorry for no Friday updates...

We went out to my friend Jeff's family lake, it was too cold to swim, I was very disapointed in not swiming. We took our puppy Chocolate out to see the lake and meet some of my friends that haven't met him yet. He had a blast with his new friends. We built a fire pit, made a nice fire, and cooked brats and chicken, yum. It was a perfect cookout day. I will post some pictures soon.

I think I still have Japanese stuff on the brain, left over from the Japanese Festival. I have been drawing Sushi, ninjas, and Japanese schoolgirls all weekend. Honestly, I draw Japanese Schoolgirls constantly. So here is the out of the ordinary sushi drawings.

I still don't have much to show but here are some thumbnails of the Spider-man comic I'm working on. I have a whole bunch of finished work to show you, I swear. I'm also working on the 1st cover to "Beyond: The late adventures of Sebastion Scott" It was really fun to design so I am really trying hard to make it beautiful.

And a girl that was stuck in my head, so I let her live in my sketchbook.

Post old stuff to recover from weekend!

I worked all the way through the weekend at my Sunday job, they called me in on Saturday. I did get alot of nice work done while I was there. but nothing finished yet I am rotating between three stories, so not to get bored with any of them. So they will be up soon. Until then I had to scour my files for stuff I scanned but never posted. So this is technially a clean up day! Enjoy my Ninja that me and my friend John mused over one day.

I have been very interested in the storytelling of illustration in a single image. Even though I have been working on lots sequential panels. I think a single picture can say a thousand words as an old proverb says. I am very interested in the drawings of Arthur Rackham. He's got so much going into each one of his illustrations. His pen and ink with the watercolors are so lush and beautiful. It's hard not to be inspired by his works here are some examples.

Not much...

I don't have much to post today. I am working on some bigger more complicated samples for the CBI contest. I am also going to submit some "Beyond" pages that I was reluctant to show due to the story only being part-way drawn. I am becoming less and less optimistic that I will even make it to the next round by the strong submissions. I wish that you had to show how long it took them to do a particular drawing. I’m wondering, because I am limiting myself to 24 hours for a single drawing and a week for a sequential set of pages. I’m not sure if that is what some of the contestants are doing. They will have to produce on deadline. Which is very hard if not practiced on a normal basis. Well, we will see.

Let it snow...

I was thinking about snowman, Christmas and snow in the summertime. Just can't wait for it to cool off.

I got to use my new Staedtler pigment liner pens on his picture. I'm not entirely happy with the darkness of this picture. The trees look ominous, but otherwise I'm happy with the results. I love the liner work on the trees. Looking for more drawings to use the liners on.

Klaatu Barada Nikto...

This is Gort the robot protector of Klaatu in the old 1950's movie "The day the earth stood still." A friend of mine mentioned that they were thinking of remaking the sci-fi classic. Which sounds like kinda cool, then he said that Keanu Reeves was up for the Klaatu part... ahhggggg...nevermind. Ha!

So I sat down and said the words to stop the behemoth robot "Klaatu Barada Nikto" and drew this from my memory of the robot. After I was done I looked up Gort on the internet and was amazed I remembered the visor and his belt design. But I did remember him being much more hulking, thus his proportion.

Wanted to mention that the Japanese festival was awesome, but I left my camera at home so sorry no Japanese Festival pics. We saw the Sumo wrestlers, a geisha presentation, and partook of the asian food, yummy.

And I bought this really cool samurai shirt!

Thank the gods it's Friday! This week has been dragging on forever!

Happy Birthday Cory! This is a birthday card featuring Sebastion and Webster from Beyond! Sorry for the bad scan, I hope to have an inked version minus the personalization up next week.

Here is an older picture of my Jupiter City when the Joh, Isaac and Jessie are around 11. I love picturing family togetherness, like how Sahl (middle older with dark hair) has his hands on his wife, Sarah's shoulder and his son, Joh, too. This picture is at a time when all of the Sci-Core family are all on the same page. After this time everything starts to fall apart.

There hasn't been a decent update to this site in a little while. But still has a whole bunch of good stuff that will someday come to fruition. You can go to the original site here: Jupiter City

This weekend my wife and I are heading to the Japanese Festival at the Missouri Botanical Gardens. I love the Japanese Festival. Great food, awesome cultural exchanges and hot Asian girls to draw!(oops... Sorry, honey... Hell, you already know.)

I post pictures of the festival on Tuesday, have a great holiday weekend!

More finished work in the works, I'm promising a color version of something and a Electric Monk episode, hopefully. Maybe I will get more finished with a 3 day weekend.

I'm Batman

Hope everyone is enjoying my daily posts; I have been on a roll lately with my new pens and a new pad of Bristol board. It's nice to actually be producing finished work instead of doodling in my sketchbook. But in all reality those old sketchbooks are a gold mine when I'm looking for ideas for finished work!

While I was drawing this picture, I was thinking about the way that Bruce Timm the design artist of "Batman: the animated series" draws batman. He draws Batman almost exclusively in the shadows. The 90% shadow technique is perfect for the Batman persona; he should stay in the shadows because your imagination can create more scary stuff than what is really in reality. Thus why the best horror flicks show you nothing, just imply and use nasty sounds. That's why "Alien" is my favorite horror movie because they kept the creature to the shadows.

Cloaked figure

This is a drawing I found in a sketch I found in a very old sketchbook. I remembered thinking about a cloaked figure coming out of steam/smoke, I don't remember why? It reminded me of some imagery that I am writing and drawing in Beyond. So I decided to finish it up and post it.

PS. I just read a really nicely written blog post about the Yezidi people of northern Iraq. Check this out: http://www.windsofchange.net/archives/008159.php . Even though I find this writing about these people beautiful and serene. A Yezidi tribe stoned a young Yezidi woman to death for marring a Muslim man. Not even a isolated group such as the Yezidi are immune to the paternal ego driven violence.

New comic: Beyond

Here is a progression from sketch to inks for a little promo piece for the new comic Beyond: the late adventures of Sebastion Scott.

It's about a young goth outcast boy named Sebastion... who dies. Yes you say this is what most young goth outcast boy seemingly yearn for. You are right in thinking that even in death our young malcontent is still not as happy as you would imagine, in that he becomes a wraith instead of a vampire or another undead legion.
Enter Webster, a six foot buffed out version of Sebastion imaginary childhood purple one-eyed friend (think Grimace turned Ahnuld.) Web looked into Seb's brain and pulled out the apperance of the only friend he ever trusted completly. Webster is there to befriend Sebastion and teach him the ways of the underworld.

Sound good? Well, that's all I got...deal, K. I'll try to get it copy of it

Sketchbook Monday...

We got a puppy this weekend, it's a English Pointer and Catahoula Leopard Mix. He is so cute, I will post pictures of him soon. It kept us up all night the first night with it's howling, but he's getting better.

It's Monday...I'm tired... here's some sketches... not new ones, but hopefully they are not up on my other art pages... I dont remember, and i ain't checking! Ha!

These drawings were for a comic I was working on with my five year old nieces and nephews for them to star in a short comic. Highlights include Mr. Pickle , the Salamander People and talking monkeys! I will still finish one or two of these before they turn 20! maybe?

I'm going to use my Friday posts as a clean up of things I want to voice my opinions and other assorted tid bits I found during the previous week.

I just found this kick-ass Sensi Jesus statue... Cracked me up!

I just wanted to show my support and tell everyone about how awesome Stardust the movie was. It wasn't as good as the book but a very close adaption with additions by the writer Neil Gaiman himself. It's well acted, directed and all around well written movie. You should check it out if you haven't already! I'm buying it on Dvd when it comes out.

And, this is a logo I came up with for my Friend, John.

Electronic Monk

This character is not a superhero, though he has the physique of one. So that is how I am justifing my superhero comment..HA.

This character was developed to be nothing but a fun Challenge exclusively for my online page. The idea is of a time traveling malfunctioning pacifistic robot monk set accsidently to do the opposite of it's program. But it will have no origin or story whatsoever! Enjoy!

Demon from Beyond

So as I promised a demon or demonic entity of some type.

For the last couple of months I have been finishing writing and drawing my first comic book "Beyond." In the story the character named Sebastion will, in the future, have to fight and imprison lots of these demonic types. So I figured I should start designing a whole lot of them so I can add them to my scripts... Lots more sketched and maybe some finished ones soon.

Here is the main character for "Beyond" Sebastion Scott...

Sebastion is a teenager who died and is now a wraith...or so he thinks?

What I do at work...

I didn't really know where to start this blog at...so I decided to show you what I do every day. My slog at work is graphic cookie cutter art I produce. Some of it isn't quite that bad....some is very bad! It's mostly conseptual ideas for layouts and products ideas. From photo borders to full fledged layouts.

Here are some of my more imaginative pieces...

This drawing was inspired by the paintings of Roy Liechtenstein.(Hit Liechtenstein's name to see original.) It was later made into the Paint Splash layout that look nothing like this. I am more drawn into this style of these paintings than Liechtenstein's comics series. Which is funny because i am so into comic book and comic book imagery.

These are some spot illustrations that i produced for the Blocks layout that we developed.

I dont get to work on demons or superheroes like I would enjoy doing... I get to produce these type of things I'm told to draw....ha
